A Beginner's Guide to Pegging

Posted by Carolyn Eagle on

Have you heard of pegging? We bet you have, even if you don’t know that specific term. If we have piqued your curiosity, read on, and let Naughty North open your eyes to the fastest growing couples’ sex act of the decade!

The term pegging was coined in Dan Savage’s “Savage Love” advice column, but it is a practice as old as dildos themselves! The definition of pegging is a sexual practice where a person with a vulva performs anal sex on a person with a penis by penetrating the anus with a strap-on dildo. It may sound clinical, but oh boy, can it feel amazing for both involved, with intense prostate stimulation for the receiver and some amazing clitoral stimulation for the giver… if you do it correctly.

If you are curious and want to give pegging a try, read on, and let Naughty North walk you through getting started with this handy beginner’s guide.

STEP #1 – TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOUR PARTNER

Any kind of new play in the bedroom should start with discussion about what you want and what your expectations will be. You are going to need a harness and a dildo or probe so why not shop together? Scroll through the offerings and pick something that looks to be a good fit for the both of you in terms of style and size. It can be an amazingly hot and sensual experience.

STEP #2 – TRY OTHER TYPES OF ANAL PLAY BEFORE YOU GET PEGGING

If you have never tried anal play of any kind, either with fingers or a toy, we suggest you try those out first. Why? Any kind of anal play needs some good preparation and time working out how to make it enjoyable and comfortable. The person receiving needs to have at least some experience with anal penetration so they can instruct their harness wearing partner in how, when, and how quickly to proceed. Once you have picked your pegging set, use that dildo manually first as well to get used to it.

STEP #3 – PICKING THE PERFECT HARNESS AND DILDO

Don’t feel you need to pick a pre-packaged set unless both the size of the dildo and harness look suitable for both of you. It can be daunting to mix and match but you can always as our experienced staff at Naughty North for suggestions. Here are our tips for first timers

  • If you are new to anal, get a small probe or dildo. You can always work your way up but something too big will be uncomfortable
  • Make sure the harness will comfortably fit the wearer. Double check the measurements to be sure
  • You should opt for a harness that has a pocket in front of the clitoris for a bullet vibrator. This gives the wearer amazing stimulation while they are wearing the harness

Some of our favourite products include:

Anal Explorer Strap-On Kit with 2 Silicone Dildos. This set gives you variety in sizes of dildos and the harness fits up to 60-inch hips plus the dildos themselves are silicone, which is always the best choice for anal play.

Sportsheets Vibrating Velvet Strap-On Harness with the Please Slim Anal Silicone 5 Inch Dildo. This is a great duo if you want vibration for the wearer and the versatility to use different dildos. The harness comes with a bullet that is tucked in the front of the harness and the slim probe is flexible and great for beginners.

Any Boundless Strap-on Harness with a Boundless Silicone Dildo. We love these items because the harnesses don’t rely on straps but instead slide on like undies. There are 3 styles to choose from so you can get something that appeals to you, and they are all washable. Pair them with one of the dildos that come in various sizes, textured or not, for a fantastic pegging experience.

STEP #3 - START WITH SOME REALLY FANTASTIC LUBRICANT AND USE A LOT OF IT

We hope that everybody knows by now that the anus is not self-lubricating like the vagina. And, while you may have gotten creative with lubricants when using your fingers (think Vaseline, coconut oil etc.) those are not suitable to use with sex toys. Oils can damage sex toy materials so get yourself a great, thick lubricant with lots of lasting power. The rule of thumb with anal play is to use LOTS of lube and then apply even more. Here are some of our absolute favourites for pegging:

JO H2O Anal Original Water Based Lubricant - This is a thicker lubricant made with more cushion for the pushing’ and a long-lasting formula that won’t dry out and get sticky.

Slippery Stuff Water Based Gel LubricantA water-based gel lubricant that is used in doctor’s offices so you know it is great quality and will stay where you put it.

JO Classic Water/Silicone Hybrid Lubricant – Hybrid lubes are the unsung heroes of anal play because they are ultra-long lasting and super slippery. They work well with sex toys because they are mainly water-based with just a touch of silicone for extra slide.

STEP #4 - FIND A GOOD POSITION

Probably the most popular position for pegging is doggie style, with the receiving partner on their hands and knees, and the other kneeling behind. Not only does this give great access to the anus, but it also puts you at a good angle for prostate stimulation and allows the giver to reach around and stimulate your penis at the same time. It also means the person wearing the harness is going to have some firm stimulation from either the base of the dildo or a bullet vibrator.

STEP #5 - STRAP UP AND START SLOWLY

Now you should be good to go! Use lots of lubricant and patience. For the partner wearing the harness, it is going to take some getting used to and it can be difficult to judge how forcefully you’re thrusting your hips. Communication is the key to pegging and remember that anal sex should NEVER be painful. Take it slow and enjoy!
